1. Question
A player asked how an effect that adds a card from the Deck to the hand would need to be worded so that the opponent could not activate Droll & Lock Bird afterward.
The suggested wording was similar to:
“Your opponent cannot activate cards or effects when this effect resolves.”
The question is essentially whether preventing responses at the moment the search effect resolves would also prevent Droll & Lock Bird from activating afterward.
2. Reddit Discussion
The Reddit discussion gave two examples of wording that could accomplish this.
A commenter associated with YGOrganization agreed that wording preventing the opponent from activating cards or effects when the effect resolves could prevent the opponent from activating Droll & Lock Bird in response to the card being added.
They also suggested wording similar to Speedlift, where the restriction is specifically connected to the card being added to the hand:
“Your opponent cannot activate cards or effects when that card is added to your hand.”
The important point is that Droll & Lock Bird normally becomes eligible to activate after a card is added from the Main Deck to the hand. Therefore, the restriction has to cover that relevant response window.
3. Summary of the Reddit Answer
| Interpretation | Result |
|---|---|
| An effect adds a card from the Deck to the hand normally. | Droll & Lock Bird may become eligible to activate afterward. |
| The effect prevents the opponent from activating cards or effects when the effect resolves. | According to the Reddit answer, this can prevent Droll from activating in that response window. |
| The card says the opponent cannot activate cards or effects when the searched card is added to the hand. | This can also prevent Droll from activating at that point. |
| The restriction specifically covers the moment the card is added. | This is similar to the wording used by Speedlift. |
4. Conclusion
According to the Reddit discussion, an effect that searches the Deck can be worded so that Droll & Lock Bird cannot be activated afterward.
Wording that prevents the opponent from activating cards or effects when the effect resolves, or specifically when the card is added to the hand, can prevent the opponent from using the activation window Droll would normally rely on.
The key issue is therefore not preventing the card from being added, but preventing the opponent from activating an effect in the window created after the card is added.
